Madras Cafe Books has moved from its former site at 165 Madras Street, lost its cafe, and is currently residing in the Science Alive building at 392 Moorhouse Avenue as a bookshop only. Why? No, not the earthquake, the landlord. These ethical folks simply signed up another tenant, for 'way more money', and then told us - and, what people!, gave us a month to get out. And requested that we dismantle all our fixtures and fittings. After 10 years (8 on 2 4 year leases, 18 months on a monthly tenancy) we were stunned at the lack of loyalty shown by them. They were within their legal rights, but..... They have destroyed our much-loved business and taken a minimum of $50K from us. But we are not bitter, much.
