This edition is out of print. This elegant volume focuses on Michael Leunig's brilliant texts (not his drawings), with all their absurdity, hilarity, poignancy and joy. Leunig pokes fun at human folly and pretentiousness, deplores the idiocy of war, and revels in the redeeming power of love.
These letters are a small fragment of the vast correspondence known to have taken place between lone voyager Vasco Pyjama and his friend and mentor Mr Curly of Curly Flat. While domestic contentment and ease with the natural world are Mr Curly's major attributes, Vasco's restless nature has compelled him into a great voyage of discovery. In the company of his direction-finding duck, he has wandered far and wide, risking, finding, enjoying and observing much. One of my favourite books of all time is Short Notes on the Long History of Happiness by Michael Leunig, published by Viking Press in a lovely little hardcover edition at $27. As far as I am concerned Mr Leunig can do no wrong but this is such a beautiful tactile volume it would have to be my pick as the best of his many books. I have given it to people on every possible occasion - it has such simple but profound truths that it is suitable for births, deaths, weddings, birthdays or just because you want to do something spontaneous.... read more
The images contained in this collection were selected for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Many of them are revealed in this book in a way in which they have not been seen before. Correction marks and 'signs of the struggle', normally etched out in the printing process, have been allowed to remain as a matter of interest and fact; an attempt to represent them in the form in which they were made.
