Monique Endt Topzend is an accomplished artist who has lived on Great Barrier Island, where a programme for the preservation of the brown teal has been instigated and run for many years.
The story is set on Great Barrier, and through Lucky’s misadventures, children will learn about the risks brown teal face in their fight to survive as one of New Zealand’s rarest ducks.
Lucky sets out to find his brothers and sisters and the story follows him through the wilderness of his environment in his search. He encounters various animals including tuna, pukeko, morepork and a stoat. His search ends when he is confronted by a dog, giving him his biggest fright. The dog is owned by a young boy, who knows about brown teal and how precious they are. The boy gently takes Pateke back to his family, where the little duck is reunited with his parents.
This story teaches children the hard facts of life for these birds. Pateke doesn’t realise he won’t find his brothers and sisters because they have been taken by the many predators the ducks face. However, the story also shows children that they themselves are capable of being part of the programme to save the teal.
Monique’s book also includes a map of Great Barrier, a glossary of Maori words used in the book, and a page on how we can help to save this small, precious bird.
